River Surfing Summit in Prague: A Global Gathering of the River Surfing Community

This past weekend, Prague once again transformed into the capital of river surfing. From Friday, October 11th, to Sunday, October 13th, the 2nd International River Surfing Summit took place on Prague’s Štvanice Island. Surfers from eight nations, representing a total of 20 river waves and projects, came together to exchange ideas, attend lectures, and surf together.

A Meeting Point for Passion and Innovation

For the first time, participants from the USA and Italy joined this year’s summit, highlighting the increasing internationalization of the river surfing community. An important fact is that last year it was still a European summit, and this year marked the first international summit of its kind. The passion for the sport was also evident when a surfer traveled ten hours in his T3 VW bus from Switzerland to be part of the event.

Day 1: Kick-off with a Night Surf Session

The first day began with an unforgettable night surf session on the Vltava River. The team led by Martin Leskovjan artistically illuminated the wave on Štvanice Island, creating a unique atmosphere. Surfers from eight nations took the opportunity to ride the waves under the starry sky.

Day 2: Lectures and Exchange of Experiences

The second day started with an early-bird surf session, followed by the official opening by the summit initiators, Martin Leskovjan and Janne Paul Schmidt. A wide range of topics was covered in the subsequent lectures:

• Martin Leskovjan discussed the creation of the Prague wave, which was realized in record time and with a minimal budget despite numerous complications.

• Heiko Heybey from Leinewelle presented the current status of their open-source software for surf waves and gave an update on leash safety.

• Sandro Santschi from Switzerland explained the extensive Swiss concept for training river surfing instructors.

• Bogac Tur from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg presented their groundbreaking study on hydraulic safety.

• Paul Primus (Boise) and Ryan Richard (Bend) from the USA provided insights into the history of their waves and the latest developments in North America.

After the informative day, participants cooled off with another surf session in the waters of the Moldova river. With a view of Prague Castle, this session became an unforgettable experience.

Day 3: Looking to the Future

On the third day, participants dedicated themselves to the future of the international river surfing network. In a constructive workshop, goals were defined, and the organization of the network was discussed.

The Role of IGSM

The Interest Group Surfing Munich (IGSM) also played an important role at the summit. For years, the IGSM has been committed to safety and the preservation and construction of waves in Munich. The mutual support through the newly founded international network is a great help in this regard. “Collaboration on an international level gives us additional momentum for our projects in Munich,” said Moritz von Sivers, a representative of the IGSM.

A Unique Format and Growing Community

What was unique about this summit was the coming together of river surfers from all over the world, who exchanged ideas between lectures and supported each other with knowledge and experience. There is no comparable format worldwide in the field of river surfing. Each year, new nations join the community to discuss topics like wave construction, safety, and competitions.

From Europe to the World: The Step to an International Summit

While last year it was still a European summit, this year marked the first international summit of its kind. This development shows the growing importance and interest in river surfing on a global scale.

Founding of the European River Surfing Network

Due to the rapid growth of the sport, the European River Surfing Network was established last year as an informal alliance of river wave operators and initiatives in Europe. The network was initiated by Janne Paul Schmidt, the founder of the Gießen Lahn Wave:

Looking Ahead

The 2nd International River Surfing Summit in Prague was a great success and demonstrates the enormous potential and growing enthusiasm for river surfing worldwide. With the support of organizations like the IGSM and the European River Surfing Network, the exchange of knowledge and experiences is being promoted, contributing to the further development of the sport.

Participants returned to their home countries inspired and motivated, ready to shape the future of river surfing. The next summit promises to be even larger, bringing more nations into the growing community.

Summit river surfingu opět v Praze! Globální setkání komunity nadchlo všechny

Minulý víkend se Praha znovu proměnila v hlavní město říčního surfingu. Od pátku 11. října do neděle 13. října se na pražském ostrově Štvanice konal 2. Mezinárodní River Surfing Summit. Surfaři z osmi zemí, reprezentující celkem 20 říčních vln a projektů, se sešli, aby si vyměnili nápady, zúčastnili se přednášek a společně surfovali.

Místo setkání vášně a inovací

Poprvé se letošního summitu zúčastnili i účastníci z USA a Itálie, což podtrhuje rostoucí internacionalizaci komunity říčních surfařů. Důležitým faktem je, že minulý rok to byl ještě evropský summit, a letos se konal první mezinárodní summit svého druhu. Vášeň pro tento sport byla také patrná, když surfař cestoval deset hodin ve svém VW T3 z Švýcarska, aby se mohl akce zúčastnit.

Den 1: Start nočním surfováním

První den začal nezapomenutelnou noční surfovou seancí na řece Vltavě. Tým vedený Martinem Leskovjanem umělecky osvětlil vlnu na ostrově Štvanice, čímž vytvořil jedinečnou atmosféru. Surfaři z osmi zemí využili příležitosti projet se na vlnách pod hvězdnou oblohou.

Den 2: Přednášky a výměna zkušeností

Druhý den začal ranním surfováním pro ranní ptáčata, po kterém následovalo oficiální zahájení iniciátory summitu, Martinem Leskovjanem a Janne Paulem Schmidtem. V následujících přednáškách byla pokryta široká škála témat:

• Martin Leskovjan hovořil o vzniku pražské vlny, která byla realizována v rekordním čase a s minimálním rozpočtem navzdory četným komplikacím.

• Heiko Heybey z Leinewelle představil aktuální stav jejich open-source softwaru pro surfové vlny a poskytl aktualizaci ohledně bezpečnosti leashů.

• Sandro Santschi ze Švýcarska vysvětlil rozsáhlý švýcarský koncept pro školení instruktorů říčního surfingu.

• Bogac Tur z Univerzity v Erlangenu-Norimberku představil jejich průlomovou studii o hydraulické bezpečnosti.

• Paul Primus (Boise) a Ryan Richard (Bend) z USA poskytli náhled do historie jejich vln a nejnovějších vývojů v Severní Americe.

Po informativním dni se účastníci zchladili další surfovou seancí ve vodách řeky Vltavy. S výhledem na Pražský hrad se tato seance stala nezapomenutelným zážitkem.

Den 3: Pohled do budoucnosti

Třetí den věnovali účastníci budoucnosti mezinárodní sítě říčního surfingu. V konstruktivním workshopu byly definovány cíle a diskutována organizace sítě.

Role IGSM

Na summitu hrála důležitou roli také zájmová skupina Surfing Munich (IGSM). IGSM se již léta věnuje bezpečnosti a zachování a výstavbě vln v Mnichově. Vzájemná podpora prostřednictvím nově založené mezinárodní sítě je v tomto ohledu velkou pomocí. „Spolupráce na mezinárodní úrovni nám dává další impuls pro naše projekty v Mnichově,“ řekl Moritz von Sivers, zástupce IGSM.

Jedinečný formát a rostoucí komunita

Jedinečnost tohoto summitu spočívala v setkání říčních surfařů z celého světa, kteří si mezi přednáškami vyměňovali nápady a vzájemně se podporovali znalostmi a zkušenostmi. V oblasti říčního surfingu neexistuje žádný srovnatelný formát na celém světě. Každý rok se ke komunitě připojují nové národy, aby diskutovaly o tématech jako je výstavba vln, bezpečnost a soutěže.

Z Evropy do světa: Krok k mezinárodnímu summitu

Zatímco minulý rok to byl ještě evropský summit, letos se konal první mezinárodní summit svého druhu. Tento vývoj ukazuje rostoucí význam a zájem o říční surfing na globální úrovni.

Založení Evropské sítě říčního surfingu

V důsledku rychlého růstu tohoto sportu byla minulý rok založena Evropská síť říčního surfingu jako neformální aliance provozovatelů říčních vln a iniciativ v Evropě. Síť inicioval Janne Paul Schmidt, zakladatel Gießen Lahn Wave:

„Výjimečná podpora v rámci scény, zejména v Praze a na všech úrovních, je mou největší motivací. Je to opravdový dar být součástí této komunity a společně ruku v ruce utvářet budoucnost.“

2. Mezinárodní Summit říčního surfingu v Praze byl velkým úspěchem a ukazuje obrovský potenciál a rostoucí nadšení pro říční surfing po celém světě. S podporou organizací jako IGSM a Evropské sítě říčního surfingu je podporována výměna znalostí a zkušeností, což přispívá k dalšímu rozvoji tohoto sportu.

Účastníci se vrátili do svých domovských zemí inspirovaní a motivovaní, připraveni utvářet budoucnost říčního surfingu. Příští summit slibuje, že bude ještě větší, a přivede do rostoucí komunity více národů.
